SGI Equipment available in Seattle

Folks- It looks like WinXP and I are going to reach EOL together; after a 20-year battle with cancer, I've signed up for in-home hospice care. As a result, I have a pile of SGI and associated equipment I'd like to pass along to someone who can still use it. It's a large pile: SGI Indigo2: Purple R10...

Re: What we* do for a living...

Well, it was only a seven-year gap in the thread (2006-2013) ... when you consider the age of some of the machines we talk about, it's nothing. As a small update since my last (2006) posting in this thread ... I've fully retired, spent some time living in France, passed all my Suns and my Tandem-bad...

Re: Nasty IPX

An IPX was my first Unix box. The machine itself was "rescued" from a dumpster behind Apple's corporate headquarters. It was the beginning of a long, slippery slope....

Thanks for him for making the effort - he drove from Paris...

I'm sorry to hear the event was a bust. As it turned out, I wasn't in Europe yet. I'll be here (in France) next year at this time, though, so if you plan a reprise, I'll be there.

Re: Tape hardware compatibility

I don't know about Exabytes, but I've had no problems at all using various DLT drives on both Sun and SGI machines; I've plugged them in and they Just Work.

Re: cat5 for a phone line

1. Can I use standard Cat5 for a phone line, so I can lay a couple of cables the same rather than mixing different types? Yes. Cat5 is really just jumped-up phone wiring; I think 1950s-style US phone wiring is "Cat1". 2. Cat5 has 4 twisted pairs but ethernet only uses 2. Is there any prob...

Re: So how does everyone do their backups these days?

... Do anyone of you still do tape backups, or have everyone moved to hdd backups? ... Anyone using DVD or bluerays for backups, or other exotic solutions? I back up the workstations to a local fileserver, using rsynch/cron or moral equivalents thereof. The fileserver backs itself up to a remote fi...

Re: Your Jobs: Time or Skill?

So what about you guys? What do you do (I think nekoneko works in the telco industry, and boy does it show when I look at his incredible collection, might wanna get into that industry myself) and would you consider it selling time or skill? Before I retired, I spent about 30 years in the microcompu...

Re: Sun and SGI gear available in Seattle, WA, USA

I'm still finding more stuff ... in particular a bunch of Sun SCSI enclosures. Most of the gear in my original list has been notionally spoken for, but back-up offers would be good in case the originals fall through. I'd like to arrange a "pick-up day" so everyone can show up at once ... s...

Re: Challenge L Colorado

Hope France is treating you well. I'm actually back in the Seattle area for the summer. One of my major tasks is reducing my collection of computers; we're going back to France in the fall, and I'd rather pass some of this stuff along then let it sit in storage. However, yeah, France has been treat...

Re: Tandem-badged SGIs

That and they were black and Shel has one nearby that he's getting rid of. I still have a black Tandem badged Challenge L Vault in the garage I haven't been able to give away. Had two, took one to recycling a while back. I wish Pleasanton wasn't so far, or shipping so expensive. I think it would be...

Re: Tandem-badged SGIs

That said, does anyone else have more info about the Tandem badged machines? That and they were black and Shel has one nearby that he's getting rid of. I'm finally back in the USA and beginning to find stuff. I'm thinking I should host a Seattle-area SGI swap-fest and pick-up day once I find all th...

Re: Challenge L Colorado

I'm selling my Challange L Deskside. Skins in Great Shape for its age, not perfect and there are some scratches and a crack on the door. System is mostly complete, It will need some boards to run. There are no drives or caddies, original key is present. Basicly ready for a restore. It is located in...

Re: Nekochan open day in Europe in the spring????

OK - an update! The building where I store (and use) my machines is being demolished in the near future so I have been under a lot of pressure to move out. Then on Tuesday (when I was still in the US) the building was flooded and ended up with ~2cm of muddy water over the floor. Nothing (valuable) ...

Re: Sun and SGI gear available in Seattle, WA, USA

Tandem-badged, all-black SGI Challenge L "Deskside Supercomputer" - At least 6 R10K processors, 1.5 GB RAM, 100BaseT Ethernet, etc. Lots of spare boards. Spare processors (incl R4k). Spare power supply. Spare fan. Cables, etc., etc. Enough stuff to keep it running for years and years. Now...
