Re: Graphics card for New Linux PC

The last time I had an ATI, it didn't work at all in 3D/linux, it just crashed instantly, that was a X800.

Re: basic language

BASIC is the devil. So is Pascal. It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration. Now I don't completely agree with that, but basic is not the best choice for...

Re: WHO IS GETTING THE IPHONE...

The iphone is very nice, but I think I'll be going with a Nokia E65 soon.

Because the iphone is closed and you'll have to use whatever apple is prepared to give.
For S60 you can literally get everything.

Re: php question

imo you'd better use php itself to list the directory, no need to go into shell commands with this. Following does what you want and a lot more. I used it to list a list of subdirectories of pdfs of a small newspaper as download links. <? function listYear($year){ chdir($year); $aFile=array(); $file...

Do you have any idea how long compiling X would take on the octane?
Not even counting patching the source.

Re: XGL Irix

Xgl technology requires good OpenGL performance, along with several unique features of recent 3D cards, and for the most part these can only be accessed using binary-only (proprietary) kernel modules for ATI and NVIDIA cards. That refers to basic GL capability of X, which needs a fast OpenGL driver...

As I understand it, it runs completely on top of opengl, so there could be a chance that it works.

There is at least a compiler-switch workaround for the indigo2 R10k, I wonder if that works on the O2, too.

Re: x86-64 Linux slow...or is it RHEL5?

It shouldn't be slow, but there are some caveats here: There are known problems with new kernels (>2.6.18), the new libata subsystem, amd64 and the linux scheduler, some almost don't notice it, and on some systems it hangs for up to a minute when there is heavy I/O. An option would be to test the ne...
