Re: Looking for good software For PPC macs

I was unaware that the ram could be upgraded or that the hard drive that shipped with it is so slow. Memory can be upgraded easily enough, if i do go to upgrade the hard drive, i will take notes on how it came apart to make sure it goes back together right. It's definitely worth checking out the re...

Re: WPA and WPA2 clients are all vulnerable to the KRACK attack.

In addition to client-side issues, I expect that an enormous percentage of wireless routers and access points never will be patched If I understand correctly, this is a man-in-the-middle attack against the client. Unless you run your router as a wireless repeater, it isn't a client. Correct, but as...

Re: WPA and WPA2 clients are all vulnerable to the KRACK attack.

It will be interesting to see which operating systems are patched. Older systems without source access are going to become dangerous on wireless networks. OpenBSD was already patched a few months ago. In addition to client-side issues, I expect that an enormous percentage of wireless routers and ac...

Re: Looking for good software For PPC macs

The main thing you're going to run into is, even by Power Mac standards, the iBook G4 wasn't super zippy with the possible exception of the very last generation (I myself use a 1.33GHz 12", and I would consider it useable for most things, but not quick; its main advantages over my MacBook Air ...

Re: Looking for good software For PPC macs

is there any other useful or interesting software for PPC that i should keep an eye out for? Adobe CS2 products work nicely on that hardware. Older versions of GraphicConverter also work well. For games, Bungie's Marathon series is a good fit. TextWrangler is a good choice for an editor, though oth...

Re: Macintosh Performa 475 replacement HDD

The Performa 475 is a very solid machine. It's basically the same machine as a Quadra 605, only marketed toward consumers instead of businesses. Back in the 90s, I had a Quadra 605 running OS 8.1, AppleShareIP, and FileMaker Pro as a department file server, license server, and light duty web-based d...

Re: Fuel hardware aggregator edits ?

Please make it sticky - (I hope I can edit the subject to remove that phrase later). Done. I edited the subject and made it into an "Announcement" post. It appears at the top of the Hardware forum, in the same box as the Hardware Aggregators. Thanks for creating the adapters, and thanks f...

Re: your latest purchase

Replace my Mac Mini: My Mac Mini is an old Core 2 Duo system from about 2008. It runs 24/7 as a BitTorrent machine plus dues a bit of file serving as well, but it won't run any more modern Windows than XP, and it's as maxed out with RAM/HDD as I can realistically get it. Are you sure about the XP t...

Re: Sync on green question

O2s are a little odd in that there is a combined sync signal on the DSUB15 connector's green pin (#2) and separate sync signals on the H Sync and V Sync pins (#13 and #14, respectively). It appears that true SOG displays work fine with this setup, while some displays appear to be only SOG "tole...

Re: Fuel hardware aggregator edits ?

Given the interest in the Fuel PSU topic and kubatyszko's particular expertise in the area, I think it may make sense for kubatyszko to start a new thread on the subject, and the mods can make it a sticky topic or promote it to an announcement, like what has been done for the aggregator threads. Thi...

Re: [ebay] SGI ONYX maintenance course binders

Those bring back memories! While I never took the Onyx course, I did take several other courses offered by SGI. Compared with other "pro" level courses I've taken from major hardware manufacturers and software providers, SGI's technical education courses were among the best, if not the bes...

Re: IRIX Source code

HPE sold it's software business to Micro Focus last year: http://www.businessinsider.com/hewlett-packard-enterprise-sells-its-software-business-2016-9 I had the impression that all of SGI's assets, including discontinued software products, like IRIX, remained with HPE's Enterprise group. Is that in...

Re: Wanted: Octane

I think Mashek is around there, but those prices are also pretty high. Doug Mashek, like Ian, sells primarily to commercial customers that still rely on SGI equipment for their work, and so the systems come with more assurance and backing than the systems one typically might find on eBay and craigs...
