Optical storage lasts 14 billion years?

That is what Arch claims:

https://archmission.org/

A tiny plastic optical disk the size of a half dollar able to store 360 terabytes and last 14 billion years. I'd buy that for a dollar!!

Re: your latest purchase

Thinkpad Z60m. Just got it today. The build quality on this tank is superb. Too bad about the 2GB RAM limit. I was going to download Ubuntu, but sysreqs are "dual core 2.0GHz processor". This Z60m has a Pentium M 760 (2.0GHz single core 32bit) which I plan to upgrade to the 780 (2.26GHz). ...

Re: What HP/DEC/Compaq do we have.

I have several vintage HP/DEC/Compaq hardware items. Here are some pictures of my DECstation 5000/133. Full 128MB RAM and a PMAG-F board. It was working (Ultrix) last time I powered it up. I'd have to look up the passwords again or boot into single user mode to reset them since it's been a while I'v...

Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

INTEL needs to sell new processors. What do they do? Make your current processor unsafe and 30% slower! https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-01-03/intel-slides-after-revealing-processor-flaw-which-facilitates-hacking-amd-surges "Fundamental design flaw". Class action suit lawyers must be sa...

Re: Alphaserver DS15

Question: How is the window resize performance with the PCI Radeon 7000? I have the same card installed into my IntelliStation 285 and the window resize performance is awful (radeon drivers). Much much slower than using fbdev. I think it's because the card does not support non-power-of-two texture ...

Re: Alphaserver DS15

Video card update: The Radeon HD5450 works well in the DS15...*but* we always strive for a better option if possible. Enter the Radeon HD7350, which is is also a CEDAR card. Specs are quite similar to the HD5450 (rebadge is common in the GPU world) but it uses GDDR3 and supports OpenGL 4. Installing...

Re: How to measure time?

I picked up a Hot Wheels Cyber Racer yesterday. Slapped in a set of new batteries and it works fine...besides the games it has a clock "app". I had never seen one before. I've recently become a HW fan because of my 3yr old son.

Telxon PTC-1184

Latest find is a Telxon PTC-1184. No pen and no power supply included, so I have to source them first. Seems like it needs an 18V 2.7A power supply. Just plugged a 20V 2.5A supply and get a blinking red Power LED. Tried to find more info about it, but the most I could find was on Telxon's website at...

Re: Alphaserver DS15

Haha congrats on getting it working but doesnt the 5430 have 1GB onboard ram? i.e. your graphics card has as much ram as the computer that's using it I've gotten my DS10L running with 1.5GB ram, but I have to have the lid up due to the low profile case not providing enough space to have ram directl...

Re: Alphaserver DS15

After failing to get Xorg working, I started looking at the alpha linux mailing lists. Compiled the radeon and amdgpu drivers into the kernel (not as modules) and got X working with a PCI Radeon 7000 64MB. But the HD3450 would not work. Neither would a HD5430 that I just got a few days ago. Then, re...

GXT6500P in other platforms

Aquired a GXT6500 for a Power5 server (which for all intents and purposes seems to have a faulty motherboard). Then I wondered if this can be used in other machines other than the IBM pSeries. It must have firmware compatible with PowerPC Macs and Sun SPARC machines, so that's the first I'll try (th...

Re: Burnt AAUI on PM6100??

That definitely sounds like a hardware failure. It's probably just easier to find a NuBus card, though with what you've got in there, you may not have the room ;) Also, I've never run the G3 and the HPV card together with a NuBus card in a 6100. I'm not even sure that's possible. I have an "SR...

Burnt AAUI on PM6100??

Hello, I'm trying to build a hotrod PowerMacintosh 6100. So far it's got 264MB RAM, a 36GB 15k SCSI drive, a Pioneer DVR105, a 2MB HPV card (upgradeable to 4MB), and a Sonnet G3 running at 247MHz. The hard disk gets hot fast, so I will probably replace it with a 7.2K drive, or a smaller (2.5inch) 10...
